We all dream of walking into our office with a full reception room of happy smiling patients ready to accept our recommendations and refer all of their friends.
This is the same dream I have kept in my mind for my twenty two years in practice. It has been my experience the way to turn this dream into a reality is to use a three step approach to move patients from their current perception of “back pain” doctor mentality to a “healthy lifestyle” doctor.
Public perception has pigeon-holed chiropractic care since its inception. If you asked one hundred people on the street about what chiropractors do, ninety-eight would talk about back pain. Ok, that’s step one. Over ninety percent of my new patients present with back pain.
Step two occurs during my consultation with my new patients. After I completely understand their chief complaint I then relate their spinal condition back to the biological functions of that area of the spine. I ask them about their lifestyle habits, supplements, medications and assess how ready they are to take their wellness potential to the next level. If they are excited about really getting better great, if they can’t understand what I’m talking about I leave it alone.
Step three is the communication I use daily, weekly and monthly in the treatment room, reception area, and in the community to educate them about the real benefit and value of chiropractic care as a healthy lifestyle model.
Once your patients begin to understand how structure and function work hand in hand with each other and how your care can further their quest for living a long, energetic and joyful life, where else would they ever want to go to their healthcare?
